Graduate Application Deadline and Information for
Ph.D. (in Literature)
and
M.A. (in Creative Writing) Programs

NOTE: This section was up-dated on September 29, 2008.


The application, fee payment and all supporting materials must be submitted on-line by December 15, 2008. Please see below.

2008-09 Graduate Student Application Fee: $70 domestic, $90 international.




Useful Links for both Ph.D. and M.A. Programs:

  1. On-line Application for Admission. (Available September 15, 2008)

  2. Statement of Purpose (submitted via on-line application. Five hundred word maximum - 4000 characters.);

  3. Personal History Statement (submitted via on-line application. Five hundred word maximum - 4000 characters.);

  4. Three Letters of Recommendations (submitted via on-line application. No hard-copies);

  5. Fellowship Application (submitted via on-line application web site);

  6. Two copies of official transcripts from ALL prior institutions attended (in original, sealed envelopes) mailed to the address below.

  7. One or Two research or term papers written for ENGLISH courses (submitted on-line via on-line application. Uploaded file limited to 1 MB. Include file extension per instructions.);

  8. GRE scores (both General and Advanced Subject exams required). Please use the following codes to ensure your GRE scores are sent to the correct location: Institution Code for UC Davis (4834). Department Code is: 2501. It is strongly recommended the Advanced Subject be taken early. (Verbal score range: 600 or better; Subject score range: 500 or better.) GRE scores are good for five years. Note: Due to GRE's mailing date of December 19th, electronically sent English Literature scores will be accepted in January by the English Department.

    Ph.D. applications are reviewed once all supporting materials have been received.

Applying to the M.A. program (creative writing in fiction or poetry) ...

Note:
Students may not be admitted for a graduate degree that duplicates a degree already held.


Instructions for applying to the M.A. program in creative writing...

  1. On-line Application for Admission. (Available September 15, 2008)

  2. Statement of Purpose (submitted via on-line application. Five hundred word maximum - 4000 characters.);

  3. Personal History Statement (submitted via on-line application. Five hundred word maximum - 4000 characters.);

  4. Three Letters of Recommendations (submitted via on-line application. No hard- copies);

  5. Two copies of official transcripts from ALL prior institutions attended (in original, sealed envelopes) mailed to the address below;

  6. Writing samples in your preferred genre: 10 - 12 poems or 2 - 3 fiction short stories (submitted via on-line application. Uploaded file limited to 1 MB. Include file extension per instructions.);

  7. GRE scores (General exam only). Please use the following codes to ensure your GRE general scores are sent electronically to the correct location: Institution Code for UC Davis (4834). Department Code is: 2501. (Verbal score range: 600 - 700). GRE scores are good for five years.

    M.A. applications are reviewed once all supporting materials have been received.

    Note: Students admitted into the M.A. program will be asked to mail in a paper written for an undergraduate literature class.
